We take a trip Inisde* the sinuous Harbin Opera House that was completed earlier this year. Designed to sit in perfect harmony with the freezing Harbin climate, the building is composed of a series of swooping white scarves seemingly sheltering the interior spaces from the harsh climate.
The swooping arms wrap the entire site and engage with visitors on arrival. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a timber clad lobby that leads to the main theatre. The rich timber presents a warmth to the cold white casing of the building. This sweeping composition is fluid and emphasizes a destination.
The main hall continues in this language appearing to erode to, exposing the “flesh” cloured seats.
The hallways boast large curved skylights allowing as much sunlight in as possible.
