Jeff Orrell: Explorations of the Unexplored

© Jeff Orrell

Jeff Orrell is a southern California native and lifelong artist that is currently working as a financial service professional. As an artist, he has exhibited his work in shows across the US; both in Los Angeles and New York City. He has recently began exploring an experimental direction in his work with a new series of digital imagery exploring the notion of the unseen and unexplored aspects of our world. His work is as curious as it is fascinating. We were fortunate to get a direct explanation behind the exploration. We’ll give it to you first hand…

“The work I do is a depiction of my fascination at the parallels between the deep regions of our own barely explored oceans and the vast void of outer space.  It amazes me how there are such vibrant colors in the places where we have to discover at great lengths (deep sea) or recreate with science, the seen and unseen frequencies of light to construct images we see in Hubble representations of our wondrous universe.”

“I often wonder if the colours we encounter at the depths are even seen without bio-luminescence. Do creatures detect those same unseen frequencies of light that we have to discern with math and physics?”

“I like to think of my art as digital assemblages as I don’t alter the brushes provided by the program I use. Much like the building blocks of matter are just random combinations of pre-existing materials that gather to form. My hope is to stimulate that same wonder I have when enjoying the exploration of light, form, pattern, depth, contrast, dimension and spirituality.”

“I take my aesthetic from Asian influences of sumi ink painting and calligraphy.”

“The asymmetrical balance and reference to the natural world that permeates that genre is very much a part of my innate sensibility.”

“Sometimes it seems I’m looking at one of those space images in the abstract internals of a jellyfish; simultaneously detecting naturally occurring patterns present in those types of creatures and space. As if created by some alien intelligence or omniscient influence, and observing a silent telepathic communication between the Marianas Trench and the Milky Way.”
